"AI With Us, Not About Us: Deaf Leadership, Sign Languages, and the Future of Human-Centered Technology"

Updated: 6 days ago

📺 I watched EUD TV – Series 1 Episode 2AI, Sign Languages and our Digital Future. I am pleased this important conversation is happening now, not later.

The episode discusses AI safety, responsible AI, and accountability. I am glad to see International Sign Language used.

I have travelled and learned sign languages in America, Jordan, and Europe. It’s powerful to see Deaf people connect globally through sign languages.

But important points are missing:

  • Where is Deaf leadership in AI development?

  • How do we protect sign languages through policy, frameworks, and law?

  • What is the danger if Deaf people are excluded from AI development?

The goal is clear:

✔️ AI must understand and use correct, human-led sign language

❌ Not replace sign languages or Deaf people

We need more than accessibility tools. We need research by Deaf people in AI.We need legal and ethical frameworks that respect Deaf culture, language, linguistics, multimodality, and more.

🤝 True progress needs dialogue between Deaf and hearing teams in AI.

I support this phrase: “AI must be built with us, not about us.”

And these strong words from WFD President Joseph Murray:

“We are not burdens. We are not service costs. We are not afterthoughts. We are builders of society, experts in solutions, and leaders of change.”

The future must be human-centered, with equal rights for language and technology.

🔎 I also recommend the AI and Deaf Leadership Conference in Kenya this August – contact the World Federation of the Deaf for more details.
