AI Signing Avatars at Train Stations – Some Are Better, But Safety Still Matters

Recently, I shared a video of an AI signing avatar at a train station. The avatar’s signing was not accurate, and it came too late to warn Deaf people standing near the platform edge. This is a serious safety concern.

The English text on screen said: “Stand back from the platform edge. The fast train now approaching does not stop here.”

But the avatar signed something like:“Fast train passed the platform then stand back.”

This means the warning came after the train was already passing, which is too late for Deaf people to react safely.

I’m grateful that some people have told me about other train stations where AI signing avatars are better. That shows improvement is possible, and we should learn from those examples.

Still, we need to focus on language accuracy and timing. AI tools must use real BSL and deliver messages early enough to keep people safe. Accessibility is about people, not just technology.

Let’s keep working to make sure everyone Deaf or hearing, can understand important safety messages clearly and in time.
