🌍 Silent Threats in Emergencies: Fire Alarms Without Flashing Lights

Writer: Tim ScannellTim Scannell

WARNING: AI images may be upsetting as they show Deaf people hurt or dead in a fire.

Emergencies like the LA fires highlight how people with disabilities, especially the deaf and hard of hearing, are often left behind. Many alarms rely only on sound, with no flashing lights or visual alerts to warn those who can’t hear.

A similar issue arose in Australia a few years ago, where deaf residents were unaware of overnight alarms during fires. The lack of inclusive systems meant they couldn’t evacuate in time, putting lives at risk.

This isn’t just a one-off problem. Hotels, public buildings, and workplaces still fail to provide adequate visual fire alarms.

It’s time for action. Visual alerts and inclusive emergency systems must become the standard. Everyone deserves the chance to stay safe, no matter their abilities.
