The AI Sign Language Landscape (2026): Not Everyone Is Solving the Same Problem

Over the past two years, I've been researching organisations working at the intersection of artificial intelligence and sign language.
One thing has become clear:
Not every organisation is trying to solve the same challenge.
As AI continues to develop, more organisations are entering the sign language ecosystem. Some focus on translation. Others build AI avatars, recognition technologies, foundation models, smart glasses or enterprise accessibility solutions.
Video Relay Service (VRS) providers are also beginning to explore how AI could enhance their services.
Rather than asking, "Which company is the best?", I believe we should ask a more useful question:
Which part of the AI sign language ecosystem is each organisation advancing?
Here's how I currently see the landscape

Foundation AI
Organisations are developing foundation models that could support future sign language AI research and applications.
Example: SignGemma
Research & Linguistics
Organisations focusing on sign language linguistics, translation quality, language modelling and collaboration with Deaf communities.

Enterprise Accessibility
Companies developing commercial accessibility solutions for organisations, broadcasters, transport providers and public services.

AI Avatars & Digital Humans
Companies are building realistic digital humans capable of presenting information through sign language.

Sign Recognition & Translation
Organisations developing computer vision, sign recognition and translation technologies.

Wearables & Smart Glasses
Emerging technologies are exploring how wearable devices could provide more personalised, accessible communication.

The landscape extends beyond specialist AI companies
The future of AI and sign language is not being shaped only by specialist AI companies.
Some Video Relay Service (VRS) providers are exploring how AI could support accessibility by assisting interpreters, improving service delivery, enhancing customer experiences, and developing new communication tools.
Universities, research institutes, standards organisations, accessibility consultancies and Deaf organisations also have an important role to play in ensuring AI develops responsibly.
Looking beyond technology
It's easy to focus on realistic avatars or impressive demonstrations.
However, technology alone should not define success.
A mature AI sign language ecosystem should also demonstrate:
Linguistic accuracy
Meaningful Deaf involvement
Responsible AI governance
Transparency
Real-world accessibility impact
These factors will determine whether AI genuinely improves communication or simply creates the appearance of accessibility.
Why this matters
AI has enormous potential to increase access to information.
It could help organisations communicate more effectively, provide accessible public information, support education, improve customer services and expand access in situations where sign language content is currently unavailable.
At the same time, AI should never be viewed as a replacement for qualified sign language interpreters in situations where human judgment, cultural understanding and interaction are essential.
The goal should be to use AI responsibly, choosing the right technology for the right purpose while recognising the continuing value of human expertise.
My ongoing research
This work continues to inform my Sign Language AI Maturity Model, which explores how organisations can evaluate AI sign language technologies beyond technical capability alone.
As the landscape evolves, I expect new organisations, new approaches and new innovations to emerge. This article is therefore intended as a snapshot in time rather than a definitive list.
The most exciting part of this journey is not which organisation reaches the market first.
It is how the sector works together to build AI that is accurate, ethical, transparent and genuinely improves accessibility for Deaf people.
Who else should be included in this landscape?
