Still Waiting: Deaf Access to Healthcare Communication

Almost a decade after SignHealth’s Sick Of It campaign exposed the critical health inequalities faced by the Deaf community, little has changed.
Access to healthcare information — in our own language — is still lacking.
Three weeks ago, I shared an idea: QR codes linking to sign language content, allowing Deaf patients to fully understand their care.
Today, I saw another hospital promoting QR codes for health resources — but once again, no sign language options.

We deserve healthcare communication in our language. We’re sick of being ignored. It’s time for true accessibility — not just for some, but for everyone.
Why not go further?AR codes using Augmented Reality apps could allow sign language translations to pop up directly on your screen, from posters, documents, or even hospital signs.QR codes could link to websites offering text, audio, and sign language, providing multiple access points to match all communication needs, including Deaf people with different literacy levels.
We need inclusion, not token gestures.
