Deaf Residents in Care Homes Deserve Better Communication

Many Deaf people in UK care homes feel isolated because staff do not know British Sign Language (BSL). Without BSL, communication becomes a struggle, leading to frustration, loneliness, and even poor care.

Some care homes, like SignHealth Homes, Easthill Home for Deaf People, and Devonshire Household, are making a difference by training staff in BSL and creating Deaf-friendly environments. But many care homes still lack sign language support, leaving Deaf residents disconnected.

We need more BSL-proficient staff in care homes so Deaf residents can communicate, feel included, and receive the care they deserve. Organisations like RNID provide guidance to improve accessibility, but more action is needed!

It’s time to raise awareness and push for inclusive care homes where Deaf culture and language are respected.
