Artificial intelligence is changing the way organisations think about accessibility.


Across education, healthcare, public services, customer support and the private sector, sign language AI is moving from research into real-world use.


New products are emerging, new investment is being announced and organisations are beginning to explore how AI can improve communication with Deaf people.


This is an exciting moment.


But I believe the conversation now needs to evolve.


For the past few years, much of the discussion has focused on technical capability.


  • Can AI recognise sign language?

  • Can it generate sign language?

  • Can it translate between signed and spoken languages?


    These questions have helped drive innovation, but they are no longer enough.


The next question is more important.


Can we trust it?


Trust is not created by technology alone.


It is earned through transparency, accountability, meaningful Deaf involvement and evidence that AI genuinely improves accessibility.


British Sign Language is a recognised language with its own grammar, culture and community. It deserves the same respect as any other language. As AI becomes part of accessibility, our expectations should also become higher.


Instead of asking only what AI can do, we should also ask:

  • How has the system been evaluated?

  • Were Deaf people involved throughout its design and development?

  • What evidence supports its effectiveness?

  • When should AI support communication, and when should a qualified interpreter remain the preferred option?

  • How are errors reported, reviewed and improved?

  • Who is accountable when something goes wrong?


These are not questions designed to slow innovation.


They are the foundations of responsible innovation.


The success of sign language AI should not be measured only by speed, realism or technical performance.


It should also be measured by confidence.


  • Can Deaf people trust it?

  • Can organisations trust it?

  • Can professionals trust it?

  • Can society trust it?


Over the coming weeks, I will begin a new thought leadership series called Building Trust in Sign Language AI.


The next article will introduce the Sign Language AI Trust Framework (Version 1.0). It is a practical framework intended to help organisations, developers, researchers and decision-makers ask better questions before adopting sign language AI.


This framework is not about ranking providers or criticising innovation.


It is about encouraging responsible innovation that respects language, values Deaf expertise and builds public confidence.


Later in this series, I will also introduce the Sign Language AI Manifesto.


While the Trust Framework focuses on practical evaluation, the Manifesto will set out a shared vision for the future of sign language AI—one built on accessibility, trust, inclusion and respect for sign languages.


Technology will continue to evolve.

Trust must evolve with it.


Because protecting sign languages in the age of AI is not simply about creating better technology.


It is about creating technology that earns confidence, respects language and strengthens the communities it is designed to serve.


This is only the beginning of the conversation.
